My name is Joel, and I am a professional graphic designer specializing in branding and corporate identity. Before anything I am a proud husband, steadfast follower of Christ, creative thinker, and a connoisseur of brown ale, In-N-Out Burger, and mashed potatoes. :) In all seriousness, I began my education at California State University, San Bernardino. With a foundation in fine arts & design, I eventually achieved my Bachelor of Arts Degree in graphic design with a minor in web design. I have had the privilege to work on a variety of projects, from international branding projects in Thailand to small business rebrandings in the Inland Empire. I am passionate about connecting with like-minded creative professionals and providing functional design solutions to forward thinking people.

[...] This past weekend as I sat on the sidelines at my wife’s roller derby game, I couldn’t help but notice how poor their defense was against the other team. Now granted they were playing last years undefeated team, there were still major holes in their strategy. But I didn’t connect the dots as to how this relates to us as designers until I watched Joel Beukelman’s new video blog, equality for brand and logos alike. [...]

Casey, thanks for your comment. Also, don't let the fact that your in college effect your confidence or your perception of validity. Everyone is in a leaning process, and frankly I think a lot of designers right out of school have great perspective on things and can add a huge voice to the design community. Keep it up man.

I completely agree with the point that you made about how the logo has to portray the overall environment of the company itself. If you don't match the quality of your services with the quality of your logo, your business will suffer in the long run.

I'm still a college student learning this so my opinion is by no means professional, but I completely understand where you're coming from.

Cheers,

Very true Joel, You can take the best logos designed, and if they are not surrounded by good elements they will be lost. I believe it is very important for us as designer to pay close attention to the whole package so that everything fits together nicely and compliments each other.

Nice topic.

Im glad you are connecting with what I'm talking about and applying it further than my simple application. It really beaks down to being well rounded and considering all avenues of exposure in design.

As far as you coming out here. Im going to be pissed if I miss you by a day or two. We will try and work this thing out.

Lastly, the beat in the intro is from Atmosphere. He's dope.

First off, love that intro/outro beat. Who is that?

Now let's get in to your message.

I loved when you spoke about the offense/defense strategy, I actually thought about this on Saturday night at my wife's derby bout. Her team has a great offense, they can skate fast and score points, but when it comes to defending against the other team they are lacking. They don't seem to be on the same page that staying together as a "pack" will help them be stronger.

I think that relates well to design, just like you were talking about. If we are really strong in creating logos, graphics or websites (offensive) and are weak at getting feedback, taking criticism (defensive) then we can only end up with just a good (not great) product.

It takes time to learn these lessons. That's why I'm pushing myself to grow and learn from different people, and through my own mistakes. I'm excited to have connected with you, and now to interact online and looks like next month, in person.

Great job.
